 Variations for Southeast England

 September

  1. Complete preparation of rose beds.

  2. Last month for budding rose rootstocks.

  3. Protect blooms ready for autumn shows.

  4. Send off rose orders (nurserymen may soon run out of stock).

  5. Obtain a supply of peat ready for planting new roses.

September

Apply last spray 10-14 days before your autumn show, so make it a good one again.

Start preparation of new rose beds when shows are finished.

 October

  1. Continue protective spraying until the middle of the month.

  2. Plant new bushes, which should start arriving at the end of the month.

  3. Start cutting back long stems to prevent wind rock during winter.

October

Tidy rose beds of fallen leaves regularly throughout the autumn.

Clear all surplus canes and bloom protectors and put into dry storage.

 November

  1. Most new roses arrive this month. Plant as soon as possible.

  2. Dispose of winter prunings and fallen leaves(preferably on Guy Fawkes' bonfire)

  3. Obtain supplies of manure, and stack under cover, if possible, to prevent nutrients being washed out by winter rain.

November

Protect pot roses and shallow rooted miniature roses from frost now.

 December

  1. Plant new bushes when soil is not frozen or too wet.

  2. Plant rose rootstocks, if required for coming season.

  3. Service pruning equipment.

  4. Check, repair or service show equipment. Order or make new items required.

 December

Review all of your record keeping of for the past year. Make a note on next years calendar of any changes necessary to dates to suit your particular conditions.
