Tony has been growing roses for over 40 years now, and has been the British National Champion for the last nine years in succession. At the moment Tony grows 1150 bushes which comprise 800 Hybrid Teas, 200 Floribundas, 100 Miniatures, and 50 Old Garden Roses. With the exception of having to buy bushes of a new varieties, Tony produces all his own rose bushes by budding onto multiflora rootstock. He also produces his own rootstocks by taking cuttings every year. Over the years Tony has bred a number of rose varieties; Thora Hird; Sir Harry [Harry Secombe]; Radio Lancashire; Holcombe Honey; George Armer; Wilf Taylor; and Nikki, which earned for him a trial ground certificate, and the Torridge Award in 1983 at St Albans. Tony has only recently started a new breeding programme for Hybrid Tea Roses, for exhibition, and already he has one or two potential show winners. So watch this space for further news! |
